PRESERVING FAMILY HISTORY!

PRESERVING FAMILY HISTORY!

Meet your instructor!

Hi! My name is Jasmine Martin, also known as Jas Lynn, and I am so excited to work with you over the next 8 weeks. I had the pleasure of speaking at Delta Sigma Theta’s Juneteenth Celebration, and this video will give you an insight into why I began my journey “Beyond the Ship!” I have been unpacking my family’s story for four years now, and I know that this voyage isn’t just for me! I look forward to walking alongside you, getting to know your stories, and helping you bring them to life! See you there!

Beyond the Ship, the film course, is an 8-week storytelling experience, created to help people reconnect with their roots and preserve the stories that make their families unique. Through meaningful conversations, guided interviews, and hands-on media tools, participants will learn how to document the memories, traditions, and wisdom passed down through generations—while also gaining the skills to continue capturing and telling their family’s stories long after the course ends. The course is designed for individuals as well as families who want to learn and experience this journey together.

In a time when history is too often overlooked, told by others, rewritten, or erased, this work carries an added urgency: to honor the voices of our elders and capture their stories while we still have the precious opportunity to hear them firsthand. By the end of the program, each participant will create a personal storytelling project of one of their family members who is open and willing to share their story, that you can then pass along to other loved ones, ensuring these memories live on from one generation to the next.

Cousin Paul Martin

My Cousin Paul was a South JerseyLegend, who trailblazed the world of entertainment right out of Camden New Jersey! For years, he would tell us his stories alongside Gamble & Huff, and his interactions hosting Stevie Wonder and many other entertainers in the industry. But there came a point and time where I knew his story needed to be documented, and believe it or not, 7 months after sitting down with my cousin, he passed away. But I was so grateful that we got to sit down with him and capture his legacy and impact! We shared this video of him telling his own story at his funeral, and the family was overjoyed to hear Cousin Paul tell the stories that will continue to live on. Him passing away helped put things into perspective, that we must continue the journey of capturing our elders stories before it is too late! Our elders connect us to the past, and if we don’t know who we are, or where we come from, the stories will continue to get lost along the way! But because of this journey we have been on as a family to archive our family history, Cousin Paul’s story will now get passed down for generations to come. This is a snippet of my family’s story, and we want to help you bring yours to life as well! So join us, and begin to build your archive of family history for years to come!

What you will need!

Content Creator Starter Kit

If you are interested in renting equipment for your family project, please look into renting the content creator starter kit to capture your story (Most likely between weeks 3 & 4). You can rent the equipment for the length of time you think is necessary to capture your family’s interview and B Roll. I will go into more detail on day 1 of class. You can also use the resources that you already have if you don’t have the budget for a rental.
